Do you feel a responsibility to contribute to something bigger than yourself? Yes, to a degree. When I was a kid, I sometimes struggled with depression and feelings of loneliness. Being creatively fulfilled is such a strange thing, but I do feel fulfilled as a human being right now: I have a job that I love, I have a wonderful girlfriend, and I have a home in Seattle by a lake.
Something that struck me is that when I do well as a singer-songwriter, it means that I, as a person, am doing well. If that is true, then the only thing that we can do that really has value is to love and know someone else intimately, therefore making ourselves and someone else not alone.
I wanted to break it down into practical terms. That means doing very un-rockstar things like exercising every day, not drinking as much, and eating healthy.
Yeah, and you begin to take it for granted. I enjoy being busy and having my hands in different things. Ultimately, I want to keep experimenting, learning, growing, and taking small steps.
I want to run a marathon, not a sprint—figuratively, not literally. In general, though, I never want to settle, but I still want to be comfortable and fulfilled. That is a balancing act: in order to stay driven, you have to realize that you never arrive , but you also have to be content with yourself as a person. I want to feel good about myself, the choices I make, and the people around me. Make as much art as you can. Put yourself out into the world and play anywhere you can until you have some traction.
And be good to people. How does living there impact your creativity? I love living here, but I think having a home and being settled in a place where I have a quiet space to write affects my creativity more than Seattle itself.
Is it important to you to be a part of a creative community of people? Not so much. I feel like my community is much more spread out throughout the country. Being home is very different from touring. For example, today I woke up, got a haircut, and bought some jeans.
I might go grocery shopping later or get a drink and hang out with my girlfriend. I love meeting people and getting to play music, but it can be taxing. I notice how my body feels a lot more because of how it affects me mentally. For movies, I thought Her was amazing.
The Boondock Saints is one of my all-time favorites. I like most things by Terrence Malick. I also like Fight Club and, of course, Star Wars. I remember my dad coming to me one day and suggesting that I let Abby play on the record.
And that was the start of it. Are you still performing as The Courage at all, or are you dedicated to the solo project? I feel I should clarify that my solo career existed long before The Courage became a more exclusive identity, which only really lasted two years, at the most.
My dedication to my own songs and path fully eclipses the time spent with the band. I prefer the collaborative yet hierarchal system we have now. And do you have another project in the works that you can share? The full length album allows me to paint a bigger picture, a bigger story with more of an arc. The EP can be more of a convenient snapshot, which also has its place. However, I prefer making an album where I can create dynamics and ebbs and flows.
I have a couple of ideas brewing at the moment. I may do something like that again for the future tours. We share your inclination to get the whole story. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. It only takes a moment. Later at the age of 18, Gundersen left his home to pursue a musical career and thus begin playing in bars around Seattle. While still a teenager, Noah Gundersen formed his first band post-hardcore called Beneath Oceans in Along with a group of friends from his high school.

Formed by his friends and his year-old sister, they served as the background band for the performances of songs from the Brand New World album in clubs and bars around Washington State.
In and the band performed at the Sisters Folk Festival. Later that year, the group evolved a little more and they managed to record their first debut album called Fearful Bones , under the general name of The Courage in However, while Gundersen recorded and played with The Courage, he remained focused on his solo career.
A recording of the original EP circulated to the desk of the producer Daniel Mendez , who modified and mixed the EP for a full release.
Mendez later worked with Gundersen to release a follow-up EP to the previous one, Family, in The song Family also made an appearance on the television series The Vampire Diaries.
