Wow what a place to visit this house is privately owned, and is now opening its gates to the Public 1st time in history, ever since I read the book Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey about the Fitzwilliams of Wentworth I wondered if we would ever get into visit and now its here.

Well, we sent a report of "our rebuff" on the "contact us" site of Wentworth Woodhouse and awaited their comments.

Let me explain:- We were visiting Tankersley area for the first time and were meeting up with friends from the North. We had no prior knowledge of this house. So 4 of us turned up at the house just before 11 a. We were confronted by a very officious doorman with a clipboard. He went from being officious to downright rude. Pointing to his head as though we were some kind of dimwits, he continued with a belligerent repetition of, " Forward thinking!

Forward thinking! Forward planning! He continued in this uncivil, abrupt manner for several minutes, whilst we assured him we would be "very well-behaved", then he told us to get in the car and be on our way!! To say we were dumb-founded would be an understatement.

Yes, we appreciated that group sizes had to be limited, but to treat us in this insulting manner was totally unacceptable. Perhaps merely "a man with attitude" but upsetting enough to be remembered one week later!

The 2nd was with a party of ex Lady Mabel College of PE students as part of this years Reunion, who like myself had spent 3 years living and training in this beautiful house.

It was great to be able to remember it all and again go in all the lovely and impresssive rooms where we used to have our lectures and to enter into Pillared Hall again where we used to "hang out" between lectures and have our tea breaks. It was good too to go up the grand staircase into Marble Saloon where we had our Dance sessions and where twice a year our College Balls were held. We were not allowed to use the staircase otherwise!

We have waited years to do this! At previous reunions we have walked up the long drive past Stable Block where we had indoor lectures and gymnastics, badminton etc down to the house but could never get past the railings before! We all commented on our tour that we spent 3 years in this beautiful historic house with its lovely decor and impressive paintings ,and sculptures but never appreciated the history beauty and wealth attached to it!

They are in the middle of restoring this beautiful house but you can still see the grandeur in the rooms we were shown.

The tour was both interesting and informative with special thanks to our tour guide Bob. Once restored this will easily be a rival to Chatsworth. I can't recommend it highly enough and we will most certainly go again. Buddysoods Rotherham, UK 9 contributions. Our Wedding at Wentworth Woodhouse!!!! We had the privilege of being married at Wentworth Woodhouse on September 7 It was the most amazing day of our lives.

We had our blessing in the painted drawing room, drank champagne in the pillared hall, had canapes in the marble room and our wedding breakfast in the whistle jacket room. My mother and father had taken me and my two siblings to Wentworth to look at this magnificent house since we were small children. I gazed longingly from the fence for over five decades just wishing that one day I would finally be allowed inside.

My prayers were answered and on my 60th birthday I married my husband Stephen there with all my family and close friends in attendance. I cannot thank Mr Mrs Newbould enough for allowing me to have my dream wedding. It was a day that will live with me forever. Michael D Barnsley, UK 39 contributions. Have always had a massive interest in the Fitzwilliam Wentworths history and having read the catherine bailey book "black diamonds" this increased my interest.

The house is magnificent being 2 houses both backing onto each other. The one you can see from the public footpath is the paladian house which was built after the baroque house which had gone out of fashion. The tours that have started are a little amateur and not well organised and the staff can be a little rude and off hand but they are not professionals most being local volunteers.

If you can ignore this its well worth the visit - note you must book in advance and you cant always get through easily on the phone so be patient as its worth it.

The marble saloon where the premier ballerina anna pavlova danced for the king and queen in is a must see. If the owners can get the goverment to pay some compensation for the mining damage caused by the opencasting in the 's then the house has a good chance to be returned to its former glory.

Once you have seen the house you can visit to garden centre which contains part of the old formal gardens and kitchen gardens of the old house or visit one of the 2 local pubs in the village. The house was sold in and is now under a major project to undergo repairs.
