The girl was caught in a net and hauled up. She called for help, but Katniss didn't give it to her. Peeta asks if they saw Katniss and she says she doesn't know, but really she does know.
She and the girl locked eyes. Peeta wonders where they were going, then says aloud that he'd leave the Capitol too. He would go home, if they let him.
As they go in, Peeta plumbs for information about Gale. Are he and Katniss related? Did Gale come to see her on the last day in District 12? Changing the subject, Katniss mentions that his father had brought her cookies on that day. Peeta seems surprised, but is he just acting? Katniss can't tell. Peeta tells Katniss that his father knew her mother when they were children.
The two part ways for the night. Inside Katniss' room, the redheaded Avox girl is collecting the outfit from the opening ceremony. It hauled her up instantly, then shot the boy through with a spear that had a cable attached and hauled his body up too. Then it disappeared. Katniss says for a moment, before the girl was taken, she locked eyes with her, but Katniss did nothing. The memory haunts her. He also asks if Gale came to say goodbye when she left.
They said goodnight, and in her room Katniss sees the redheaded Avox. She asks the girl to take some clothes to Cinna, and as she falls asleep, wonders if the girl will enjoy watching her die in the Games.
In Chapter 4, we see how Katniss learned to forage, and she describes how, after the meal of katniss roots she gathered, she and her family felt full for the first time in months.
A few paragraphs later, the story returns to the present, and Katniss sits down to a large breakfast of eggs, ham, fried potatoes, bread, and other things.
The theme continues in Chapter 5, when Katniss meets with Cinna. At the press of a button, Cinna summons a giant meal, prompting Katniss to consider the literally days of effort it would take to prepare the same meal herself at home.
The scene highlights exactly how much the people of the Capitol have compared to those in the districts, particularly the poorer districts like District SparkTeach Teacher's Handbook. She mentions that while they are allies now, they understand it can't last forever, but they don't discuss it because surviving the Careers is still their main priority.
When Rue begins to tell Katniss about the brutality of punishments in District 11, as well as about the different leaves and plants and animals that they have, Katniss thinks about the Gamemakers and how they would probably be afraid to air any of this discussion. One of the ways in which the Capitol is able to maintain control over the districts is by keeping people in different districts apart.
Perhaps if they knew just how similar they all are, or how they could easily work together, then the Capitol would be in danger of another uprising. Katniss certainly increases her strength by joining forces with another tribute. It is interesting, too, that they both come from underdog districts, where daily living is a struggle.
Katniss and Rue's friendship and exchange of knowledge is exactly what the Capitol is afraid will happen between entire districts, a combination of forces that could lead to a revolt in much the same way that Katniss and Rue are taking on the Careers.
Katniss trusts Rue, and when Rue claims that she doesn't think that Peeta was putting on a lover-boy act at all, that he truly is in love with Katniss, the reader is led to believe that Katniss will give Rue's comments serious consideration. She's been wavering on Peeta throughout the entire novel, and now she has someone else to talk to about him, someone who believes that Peeta genuinely loves her and was trying to protect her.
Still, Katniss works to sort her thoughts out. In the meantime, she begins devising a plan to get at the Careers' supplies, particularly their food. She decides that the problem in the Hunger Games so far is that the Careers haven't been hungry enough.
This foreshadows how Katniss and Rue will work to weaken and take down the Careers later. When Katniss and Peeta are trying to get up on the cornucopia to get away from them, one of the mutts bites Peeta's leg as Katniss tries to pull him up. They are unable to save the leg and it has to be amputated.
Well, in Catching Fire, Katniss is 'reaped' to compete in the 75th Hunger Games, which is her nightmare. This time, she has decided to partner with Haymitch to save Peeta and sacrifice herself.
However, Peeta has plans of his own and is trying his best to save Katniss too. Katniss also has vague conflicts on whether it is Gale or Peeta she likes. In the end, Katniss discovers District 13 is real, and Peeta is captured by the Capitol.
Of course, there are many other problems, but these are the major ones. They never dated each other, but in the beginning Katniss was just pretending to love Peeta.
But Peeta really loved her. Gradually, Katniss falls for Peeta. At the end, Katniss and Peeta marry. In short Peeta wanted Katniss to save herself and to forget about Peeta if need be. He said this because he always loved her, even before exposing himself in the interviews; he didn't want anything to happen to her. Peeta kisses Katniss because he loves her, but Katniss kisses him to protect Peeta. This book is filled with so much suspense! Here are only a few examples that you can translate any way you need to Book 1: Will Katniss win the games?
